Resources and Links

There are lots of resources online for finding the right book for your child to read, here are just a few:

When helping your child pick the best book to read it can be helpful to try some of the following tips:

  • Open a page and read a paragraph, how many words were new?
  • Did the sentences make sense?
  • Does the reading feel comfortable?
  • How does the book look? Too long, too short, comfortable print, some space, a few illustrations...
  • Check to see if your child will like the book by:

reading a summary, using a computer catalog, looking for award winning books or books on special lists, recommendations from peers, previous experience with the author, genre, setting, characters or similar story.
